The 78th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 14th September 1853 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was West Australian, a bay colt by Melbourne out of Mowerina, owned by Mr Bowes. A field of 10 runners contested the race, although there were 92 subscriptions of 50 sovereigns each, which was worth 4600 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £2,175. (Equivalent to £278,400 in 2017)
